According to the CMSA (Case Management Society of America) and several others organizations that case management alone means that it is a collective system that helps the patient and their family needs through the communication, available resources of promoted quality, and cost-effective outcomes. In 1980s, case management started to expand all throughout in different settings. Case management had no boundaries of what was consider being case management. Many other professions such like nursing, social workers, and vocational specialists can be case management based on their level of skills. Their main goals are to provide patients with safe care and cost –effective price. In 1990, Case Management Society of America was the support and development for those who wanted to pursue the role as case management. There are many areas that you case management work can work. Case management in the acute care setting is focused mostly in hospitals and sub-acute facilities. To be an acute care case management is training and continuing education for social workers, nurses, counselors and professionals of the medical or social services fields. Some considers nursing case management to be a productive and efficient, collective approach of giving and coordinating. But the main purpose of a case manager as a registered nurse in an acute care setting is to advocate for the patient, give quality care in a cost-effective manner and to promote positive health care outcomes.
